Visualizing Scent
2014
Scent
perception is one of the five senses. It’s said to be the sense that is most
closely connected to memory. Scents can be putrid and make us recoil in disgust
or they can be calming and make us inhale in ecstasy. Through my work I
interpret the sensation of scent into a visual image.
Through the
art making process for this project I held bundles of scent: lavender, cloves,
soap, rosemary, coffee, and onion while painting each of my six images. The
media for this series consisted of water color and oil pastels. Together these
two media create a variety of textures and plains of color that attempt to
capture the experience I had when smelling each scent.
Throughout
our lives scent is such a day to day occurrence that it often goes over looked
unless a particularly strong scent crosses out path. We don’t always notice the
presence of scent and its potential to be used in the art making process. Scent
may be the sensation most closely connected to memory but it is, in daily life,
one of the least noticed and remembered. Through this series of works I hope to
bring scents to the forefront of the mind of the viewer in their daily life.
